Amanda took over the training reins of the historic Coombelands Racing Stables at Pulborough in West Sussex, from her father Guy Harwood, trainer of the great Dancing Brave, in 1996. She and her husband Mark, who was a successful jumps jockey, quickly emulated her father's success in sending out Indian Lodge to win the Group 1 Prix de la Foret, and Emirates Prix de Moulin de Longchamp - at Longchamp as well as Demophilos to finish 2nd in the Rothmans St Leger. She has also trained numerous Group 2, 3, Listed and Heritage Handicap winners.
With her father Guy Harwood being such a successful trainer, Amanda was brought up around racehorses. Amanda was a successful amateur jockey winning 90 races and became the first lady to ride in the Champion Hurdle at the 1990 Cheltenham Festival. Amanda was also a successful three-day event rider, she won Punchestown junior three-day event and also represented her country in Italy.
At the end of 2021, Amanda and her sister Lucinda (wife of flat jockey Jim Crowley), took over the ownership of Coombelands Equestrian, founded in 2006 by their sister Gaye. She designed and developed the cross country course and all weather arenas for show jumping, arena eventing and dressage, hosting a number of One Day Events, Hunter Trials, Affiliated and Unaffiliated Show Jumping events, Dressage, Pony Club, Riding Club and Clinics.
